Research Abstract |
This research was executed from April, 2001 to March, 2003 in order to increase a burst strength CFRP pressure vessels reinforced with SMA fibers and to establish a convenient method of damage detection in the vessels. Through this study, the main research results were obtained as follows. 1. In order to examine an effect of SMA fibers memorized compressive strain, an isotropic aluminum tube was tested under an internal pressure. The failure strain on the aluminum tube reinforced with SMA fibers was 66% larger than one without SMA fibers and this result showed the effect of SMA fibers on an increase of the burst strain and strength in the aluminum pipe. 2. In a case of CFRP pipes, the effect of SMA fibers on their burst strength was also confirmed but the increase of burst strength depends on the orientation angles of CFRP and SMA fibers. As a result, some optimum angles give the maximum burst strength of CFRP pipes reinforced with SMA fibers. 3. The CFRP pressure vessel was reinforced wi

th SMA fibers which were memorized compressive strain over their temperature of transformation. Its strains of the pressure vessels was smaller than one of the pressure vessels without the SMA fibers and than one of vessels with SMA fibers not using memorized compressive strain. 4. The performance of 1.0mm diameter of SMA fibers was better than one of 0.5mm diameter. The maximum internal pressure of CFRP vessel which was reinforced with 1.0 mm diameter of SMA fibers memorized compressive strain showed an increase of 25.5 % compared with one of vessel without SMA fibers. This result means a primary object of this research 5. The FEM analysis was formulated and the result obtained by the FEM agreed with the experimental result. This FEM analysis is able to use for searching the optimum orientation angles of CFRP and SMA fibers in design of CFRP pressure vessels reinforced with SMA fibers and for detecting internal damage in the CFRP pressure vessels reinforced with SMA fibers. These results were presented as an invited lecture in the 2002 spring conference of the Korean Society for Composite Materials and were also presented in the conferences of domestic academic societies Less
