Research Abstract |
This research aims at three-dimensional imaging of land cover using polarimetric and interferometric information obtained by Polarimetric and Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (Pol-InSAR). The coherence between the scattering matrix elements yields information necessary for extracting scattering centers of two different height. This bring us the tree height estimation which is useful for estimating tree biomass. Therefore, the role of Pol-InSAR data is mandatory for monitoring the earth environment as regards CO_2 reduction. In this research project, we first carried out re-theoretical establishment on radar-polarimetry. Based on the principles, we verified the formulations of coherency, decomposition, polarimetric entropy, and averaged angle alpha in terms of scattering matrix elements. Then the coherency formulation is newly developed using ESPRIT algorithm, which can yield highly accurate scattering centers. Using E-SAR data set provided by DLR, Germany, actual tree height estimation was carried out successfully by the ESPRIT algorithm. The calculated result shows the effectiveness of Pol-InSAR data and also that two-polarization data yields similar tree height estimation. The overall results conducted by this project reveal that repeat-pass polarimetric data-take will provide us with tree height estimation which is necessary for biomass estimation.
