Research Abstract

Magnetoelectropolymerization (MEP; electropolymerization under magnetic fields) is a unique method for the synthesis of conducting polymers and control of their properties. Redox behavior of MEP polypyrrole films was investigated in aqueous solutions containing various salts. It was found that the presence of bulky cations such as tetraethylammonium and pyridinium in the electrolytic solution hinders the redox processes of the films polymerized in magnetic fields above 0.2 T. This behavior was applied to a, modified electrode with a wider potential window.
MEP was also applied to the preparation of fenicyanide-doped polypyrrole films, and the redox behavior of ferricyanide ions in the films was investigated. It was found that MEP considerably changes the redox behavior of ferricyanide incorporated in the polypyrrole films. This effect results from the control of the doping-undoping processes of dopant anions, which are accompanied by the redox reaction in the films. This result would lead to novel methods for synthesis of functional conducting polymers and the control of redox reactions.
