Research Abstract |
The influence of sex hormones, such as testosterone and estrogen, on crystal formation, urinary lithogenic factors, renal oxalate clearance, basolateral sulfate/oxalate exchanger expressiom in the kidney and osteopontin expression were investigated in Sprague-Dawley rats. The following findings were obtained. 1. Testosterone promotes stone formation by increasing urinary oxalate excretion and suppressing osteopontin expression in the kidney. 2. Estrogen inhibits stone formation by decreasing urinary oxalate excretion and increasing osteopontin expression in the kidney. 3. Male rats demonstrates a higher urinary excretion as well as a higher renal clearance of oxalate compared to female rats. 4. Testosterone increases basolateral sulfate/oxalate exchanger expression in the kidney. 5. Estrogen decreases basolateral sulfate/oxalate exchanger expression in the kidney. These results may explain why urolithiasis is a male predominant disease.
