Research Abstract |
Japan, two-thirds of which is covered with forests, occupies a very high place in the world with regards to forestry. The largest part of the forest land in Japan is privately owned. With economic growth, deforestation has been rapidly advancing, and with a decrease in the number of forestry workers, the ruin of the forests has been devastating. In recent years, a good deal of attention has been paid to the natural environment surrounding the earth, resulting in a serious call for forest conservation. At schools, a new course of study went into effect, and various hands-on activities were instituted to foster a "zest for living" and cultivate a "rich humanity" through integrated study, environmental education, and hands-on activities. The purposes of this program might differ, depending upon the differences in productivity of agriculture and forestry by the participation of local residents. 【○!2】 When we observed some Satoyama programs, we found a distinct difference in approaches ; Should the mountains be preserved as they are? Or should mountains be developed so that people can use them easily. 【○!3】There were a few mountains called Satoyama where schools could provide students with various hands-on activities. Through our research study, we came to the following conclusion ; Support of technical staffs and volunteers with qualification are required so that schools can provide students with various hands-on activities in the mountains called Satoyama. In addition, teachers should have qualifications with regards to hands-on activities. We showed some examples of crisis management and insurance since hands-on activities in the mountains can be dangerous. Also, we took "horse therapy" as an example of emotional education in the Satoyama program, and showed the details of the therapy. At present, there is a plan that students will participate in the agricultural facilities in Izumi City, Osaka. We would like to reflect the fruits of our research study of the plan. Less
