Research Abstract |
It is difficult for educators to teach a large class due to a wide range of students' ability. To overcome the situation, introducing a CAI system can be an effective approach to support students' learning in a large class. However, development of courseware materials takes much time and often needs sophisticated skills. A student modeling technique is also requisite to develop teaching materials corresponding to students' individuality. During the research period, a formalization method of teaching materials employing a student model is proposed. XML is used to formalize teaching materials adaptive to cover learners' individuality. The methodology is based on the course outline diagram, which was proposed by the author to support courseware development. The diagram consists of pre-defined components, which are adequate for formalization using XML. The structure of each component is formalized to include standard teaching materials, advanced teaching materials, detailed teaching materi

als, additional materials, exercises, pre-test, post-test and so forth. Although a formalization method using XML has proposed, its evaluation is continuing work due to the rapid progress of the standardization technology named SCORM. It is establishing the position as a de facto standard method to formalize teaching materials contents considering their interchange among various learning management systems. On the other hand, the domain of teaching materials development is determined to the network administration considering the variety of teaching contents at the early stage of this research work. Realization of a learning environment for practical network administrator education is also a very difficult subject. In fortunate of the selected teaching domain, an innovative hand-on laboratory method for teaching administrative aspects of computer networking is proposed as a side effect of the research work. The formalization method using XML studied in this research should be modified to meet the SCORM specification considering teaching materials reusability. Less
