Research Abstract |
The fate of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the environment was elucidated. Investigation concerning precipitation, dry fallout, the soil, sediments, upper layer water and organisms was executed. The detailed investigation concerning precipitation and dry fallout was carried out for one and a half years in the city outskirts region in the central part of Toyama Prefecture. Precipitation was gathered 1-4 times at each month. The concentration, the composition and the amount of the deposit load of PAHs were analyzed as well as the partition of PAHs between the particulate and dissolved phases. The mutagenicity of precipitation was also analyzed. Dry fallout was gathered once every 1-2 months. The amount of the deposit load and the composition of PAHs with the dry fallout were analyzed. The investigation concerning the soil was executed in three regions, that is, Shinminato City, Osawano Town, and Io mountain ranges located in the prefecture boundary in Toyama Prefecture and Ishikawa Prefecture in addition. The concentration and the composition of PAHs in the soil was analyzed from factors such as the distance from the urban area and the trunk line road as well as the amount of the organic matter. The investigation concerning sediments, upper layer water and organisms was carried out in the Gejo river which flowed in the central part of Toyama Prefecture and in reservoirs distributed on the Imizu hill which was the source region of the Gejo river. The distribution characteristics of PAHs included in sediments, upper layer water and organisms were elucidated. The distribution characteristics of PAHs in the water environment were discussed.
