Research Abstract |
Yamanaka discovered new exotic superconductors and various types of clathrates by electron doping to layer-structured metal nitride halides and by high pressure synthesis, respectively. Takabatake clarified the mechanism of the gap formation in Kondo semiconductors whose power factors are higher than conventional thermoelectric materials at low temperatures. Fujii discovered novel high-capacity hydrogen storage inorganic materials through investigations on the chemical reaction mechanism. Yagi developed a new method of detecting charge imbalance of non-equilibrium superconductivity using small tunnel junction devices fabricated with nanotechnology. Sera clarified the mechanisms of multipolar ordering in CeB_6-related compounds and exotic superconductivity in layer-structured metal nitride halides and PrOs_4Sb_<12>. Suzuki discovered the pressure-induced superconductor - insulator transition in the chalcogenide spinel compound CuRh_2S_4. His team determined the electronic band structure of s

uperconductors La_<2-x>Sr_xCuO4 and Nd_<2-x>Ce_xCuO_4 by means of HX-PES, SX-PES and XAS. Udagawa found the rattling motion of rare-earth guest ions in various caged compounds and shielding effects of charge carriers for the rattling by Raman scattering spectroscopy. Ekino carried out STM/STS investigations and observed characteristic structures and electronic properties with atomic resolution for novel superconductors and thermoelectric materials. Taniguchi and Namatame clarified fine electronic structures near the Fermi level of Kondo semiconductors and exotic superconductors by means of high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation Oguchi clarified the electronic structure of several superconducting, thermoelectric and hydrogen-storage materials and designed a novel multiferroic system Bi_2MnNiO_6, on the basis of first-principles calculations. Jo theoretically demonstrated roles of soft x-ray absorption linear dichroism in identifying the orbital polarization and its ordering in transition-metal compounds. Nagai elucidated the sound propagation in liquid He-3 immersed in aerogel, and proposed a quasi-classical theory of boundary effect in anisotropic BCS states. Less
