Research Abstract	1.拠点としての整備状況研究開始後1年半を経過した現在までに、拠点として以下の整備を進めた。先ず、本研究推進の場として、2001(平成13)年10月に、私学助成に係る「ナノテクノロジー研究センター(NTRC)」(総面積1,500m2、うちクリーンルーム420m2)棟を、早稲田大学西早稲田キャンパス近くに完成させた。第2の施策として、2002(平成14)年6月に、ナノテクノロジーファウンドリー(NFD)を開設した。これは、文部科学省が策定したナノテクノロジー総合支援プロジェクトの一環として、ナノレベルの極微細加工、造形支援事業を行う機関としての選定を受けたことによるものであり、この機関の設置により、ナノテクノロジーを推進する中核的拠点として、単なる学術情報の発信、集積にとどまらない機能を発揮できる態勢が整った。第3に、2002(平成14)年9月に、産官学での「情報交換と技術交流の支援」のため「ナノテクノロジーフォーラム」(NFM)を設け、共同研究や受託研究を積極的に展開する場を設けた。第4に、学際性が際立つナノテクノロジーにおける社会からの強い人材ニーズに応えることを目的として、早稲田大学大学院理工学研究科に分野横断型の「ナノ理工学専攻」を新設し、この度第一回入学試験を実施した。なお、本専攻のグループを核とする集団が、文部科学省21世紀COEプログラムにおいて、教育研究の重点化の対象に選ばれている。これら一連の施策により、本拠点は、中核的研究拠点(COE)たる条件のうち、卓越した施設・設備、情報の発信・集積拠点、支援体制、外部との知的交流、をかなりの程度満たすに至ったと考えている。今後は卓越した研究成果の積み重ねにより、真の拠点たることを目指すと共に、今年度設置した外部評価委員会によって、私たちの研究拠点および活動が真にCOEたるに相応しいか、の客観的評価をいただくこととしている。 2.研究進捗状況本拠点では、「ナノ物性」、「ナノプロセス」、「バイオマイクロシステム」および「ナノ理工学基礎」の4グループを設けている。グループ内のメンバー各個の研究が順調に進展したことに加え、メンバー間の緊密な連携、さらに、学内外の機関との連携も積極的に推進した。【研究組織の変更】研究開始以来1年4ヶ月の時点で、研究リーダーを含むナノ物性グループの組織強化が必要、と判断するに至った。第1の理由は、ナノ構造と生体分子との相互作用を理論面から担当し、適正なナノ構造配列など実験に対する具体的な指針を提示できる人材を補強し組織を強化する必要性が生じたことである。第2に、巨視的量子コヒーレンスを担当した栗原の専門である純粋物性理論と、分子ナノ工学構築を最大かつ緊急の課題として推進する本拠点の現状との間には、まだ隔たりが大きく、羅針盤的提言への期待が時期尚早であることが判明したためである。このため、従来、薬学領域における電子計算機の活用法の開拓とこれを適用した酵素機能の解析に関する研究を遂行してきた星野と栗原との交代を行った。以上の内容の組織変更願に基づき、同年11月6日付けで文部科学大臣の変更承認書を得た。【拠点内共同研究強化の方策】 2001(平成13)年6月に研究を開始した初年度には、各メンバーが従来各個に進めてきた研究の慣性を尊重して、月例の研究会による相互の理解に重点を置いたが、第2年度の2002(平成14)年4月からは、拠点としての連携協力体制を格段に強化するために、共同研究の成果に対する研究費の重点配分、ならびに月例の研究室ニュース発行による連携強化、という二つの新たな施策を実施した。ニュースには、共同研究の状況報告、協力依頼の呼びかけ、などを記載することとしたため、複数の拠点内共同研究がメンバー各個の得意技を提供し合う形で進み始めた。【他機関等との連携・協力】世界規模でのナノテクノロジー研究・開発の機運の高まりの中で、日本が国際貢献を果たし、同時に日本の製造業再活性化を進めるために、従来、メンバー各個が築いてきた交流関係に加えて、アメリカ合衆国のStanford大、北海道大学のナノテクノロジー研究所など、組織としての連携・協力を積極的に進めている。
