| Research Abstract |
Climate change will increase the variability of weather and most likely result in more extreme weather events as warmer days and nights, more unpredictable rains, drought, flooding, etc. With limited adaptive capacity, and high dependency on climate dependent agricultural livelihood, climate change will hit developing countries hardest. In this state, research-based knowledge is crucial to effectively deal with sector-specific impacts of climate change by means of enabling the process of adaptation. My attempt is towards understanding climate change, its impacts and adaptation to water resources at local level (especially in rural communities) using social research techniques (such as household surveys, key persons interviews), which complements physical model based studies.
Developing on my earlier research in Nepal, currently I am expanding its scope in Thailand and Srilanka. I am implementing the research through case studies, closely collaborating with my host researcher and his Ph. D. students. I did datacollection (household questionnaire survey) in Northern Thailand (Yang Luang village in Mountainous Mae Chaem River Basin), and Srilanka (Walawe and Kalu Ganga river basin)in August 2013 and January 2014, respectively. Data from Thailand are partially analyzed ; results are summarized and refined in the form of journal paper. Works on first two components are completed. Analysis of remaining data from Thailand and work on last component is in progress. After summarizing the research in Thailand, soon I will be handling the data from Srilanka. Overall, my research work is progressing in the planned direction.

I expect better research results than originally planned because I am expanding research in various developing countries, and can do a comparative study between different countries.

| Strategy for Future Research Activity |
I plan to replicate my work in Cambodia and if time allows in Japan too. My final target is to compare different country-case studies, characterize climate change situation and recognize the effective adaptation/mitigation measures in water resources which can be shared between different countries.
