Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In total the research project had some delay until its final acceptance from the Tottori University Committee for Animal Experimentation. After the changes we applied in our protocol we received acceptance. In the beginning we have worked in the creation of a pre- experimental model in order to decide the correct treatment dose of nicotine. That was decided to be 100μg/ml. We also used animals in order to improve the ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) method, which is very difficult for the rat experimental model.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
There was a delay in the creation of the animal model due to some regulation of the Tottori University Committee for Animal Experimentation and we were not allowed to create the cigarette smoke exposure model. This had as a result to prolong the beginning of the experiments because we had to extensively research the international literature in order to conclude on which component of the cigarette smoke we should choose as the most representative. The nicotine was selected as the most harmful component and also the dose was decided. The protocol was resubmitted to the Tottori University Committee for Animal Experimentation and finally was accepted.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The experimental model of nicotine treatment will be fully created and all the biochemical parameters described in the research protocol will be evaluated. The correlation between sperm maturation process and the biochemical parameters will be evaluated. Data that we will obtain hopefully can enhance the cigarette smoking cessation and be an adjunct tool for the physicians to encourage the smokers for smoking cessation.
