Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In this phase of the research, we have been focusing on clarifying Japan’s diplomacy in the transitional phase from the last years of the Cold War period to the early post-Cold War era. In this context, especially in the early part of the 1990s, Japan sought to influence the emerging post-Cold War order in the region, by building on its relations with ASEAN countries while trying to find a balance in its foreign policy between its relations with the United States and, on the other hand, China. This stage of my research is therefore focused on trying to analyze Japan’s diplomacy. In this phase, Southeast Asia and China were two areas in which Japan showed particular activism in its diplomatic initiatives. Accordingly, we have searched and analyzed several hundred pages of Japanese and American declassified documents drafted by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), the United States Department of State and Department of Defense. We have requested the declassification of dozens of MOFA’s classified documents through the Freedom of Information Act, in addition to conducting research at MOFA’s archives in Tokyo. More recently, we have carried out research in the United States at the Ronal Reagan Presidential Library and at the George H. W. Bush Presidential Library. We cross-checked information by carrying out interviews with former MOFA officials as well as with a high-ranking former American diplomat. We are currently in the process of writing a paper based on the preliminary findings.

Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
We are in line with our plan and with the objectives we have set in terms of sources I have analyzed, interviews carried out/arranged, definition of the structure of the research.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In addition to continuing the analysis of primary sources, we will carry out additional interviews with relevant policymakers. We will complete the drafting of a paper based on the finding of our research, which we will present in August 2015 at an international conference in the Republic of Korea. On the basis of the comments received at the conference, we will then draft a final paper for publication in an academic journal.
