Research Abstract |
The present study focuses on elderly drivers' driving performance such as drivers' searching head movements and driving speed. The performance was also evaluated by driving instructors. The behavioral and evaluative measures were compared between age groups such as middle-aged and elderly drivers. A hazard perception test was conducted. The scores of hazard perception were then related with the scores of driving performance. Participants totaled 198 drivers. Elderly drivers demonstrated fewer searching head movements than younger drivers (middle-aged and semi-elderly drivers). As for speeding behavior, elderly drivers drove at higher speed than younger drivers at uncontrolled intersections both with restricted visibility and with stop sign. Elderly drivers also showed much lower ability to perceive hazards than younger drivers, especially in perception of both potential hazards and hazards relating to prediction of other road users' behavior. We established training programs for elderly drivers relating to both "stopping and searching behavior" and "hazard perception", which were then evaluated how effective were. A "feedback" technique using videotaped driving scenes was mainly used in the training by driving instructors. Generally, positive effects were demonstrated by evaluation study. Finally, new training programs for elderly drivers were proposed.
