Research Abstract |
In this term of project we have studied the Illustrated London News (ILN) by the two methods as below. 1.We have read ILN with each interest, and searched the other materials related to it at home and abroad. (1)MASAIE-MATUMURA (The head investigator) visited UK, particularly London, Liverpool, Manchester, and so on, three times in this term, and searched the archives in which the Japanese delegations in the late-Tokugawa and early-Meiji era were reported. (2)KOJI-OZAKI (the investigator) visited London, too. And he read the documents of the Local Government Board in the 19th century at the Public Record Office. (3)SHINGO-AKIYAMA (the investigator) visited China to look for the materials concerned with the Otani-Party, which were reported in ILN many times and had contributed to the development of the archaeology in Meiji Japan. 2.We have made the data-bases of the engravings in ILN from 1842 to 1851.
