Research Abstract |
This research has been done to develop honeycomb cell structures which have high absorbing capability of impact energy by crushing and fracturing of cells. The obtained results are summarized as follows : (1)Breaking and penetration prediction of projectile : When a cone projectile with sharp edge penetrates a thin aluminum film, it has been found that cracking and penetrating phenomena can be predicted by the criterion of limit equivalent breaking strain in the penetration simulation. The phenomena have also been confirmed by the experiments. (2)Crushing phenomena prediction : The energy absorbing phenomena of honeycomb cell structures have been simulated by the explicit dynamic finite element method, and the simulated results of absorbing energy as well as folding phenomena have been compared with that of crushing experiment of aluminum cell structures. (3)Absorbing capability of honeycomb cell structure with sheet : Honeycomb cell structures with thin sheets has been fabricated and tested by the experiments. It has been found that there is much effect for energy absorption when the crushing of honeycomb cell structures accompany the sheet fracture by the projectile. The energy absorbing effects have also been predicted by the crushing and braking simulation of FEM.
