Research Abstract |
We have made researches on the process of democratization and role of NGOs in Asian Muslim world (Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia). Concretely, we repeated have examined problem on, from the progress of democratization (election) and the shape of civil society to the role and actual conditions of NGOs, in Asian Muslim world. As the result, next point were clarified. (1)Not only domestic affairs but also international situation have again large effect on the progress of democratization (election) and the formation of civil society ( the role of NGOs). In Pakistan, we visited numerous NGOs with various sizes in order to understand the situation of civil society. In Bangladesh, we have dealt with a case of the Brahman-Bariya incident in 1998 in Bangladesh, in which ADAB (the Association of Development Agencies in Bangladesh) organized annual ceremony of the Liberation War, and the local Islam groups attacked on the event. In Indonesia, we made field research on the relation between local government and local NGOs in the province of East Kalimantan. In malaysia, we made mainly research on Islamic-oriented NGOs of Malay community. The relationship between democracy and civil society is a theoretical as well as a practical problem which the contemporary international community is faced with, and which has been actively studied worldwide. However, the relevance of civil society for democratization in the Islamic world is comparatively less explored and there remain many areas to be investigated. The study of the Asian Muslim world in particular has also just begun, and, in that regard, the present study is regarded to be making a significant academic as well as a practical contribution.
