Research Abstract |
The purpose of this research is to characterize whether the origin of East Asian wild boar and domestic pigs is located in Vietnam by morphological and genetic analyses. For three years from 2002 to 2004, we visited several local villages to collect samples from wild boar and native pigs in North, West and middle areas of Vietnam. About morphological analysis, Sus bones collected from villages were measured, whereas, genetic analyses were conducted to collect heir and meat from native pigs, isolate a total of DNA from the samples and amplify mitochondrial DNA from DNA samples. A total of 248 DNA samples were sequenced and phylogenetic analized. The following results were obtained. 1)Ryukyu wild boar was genetically related to Vietnamese wild boar. The present results supported the hypothesis that Ryukyu wild boars are a unique species established on isolated Ryukyu Islands. 2)Vietnamese wild boars and domestic pigs possess remarkable genetic diversity. Vietnamese pigs, including wild and domestic pigs may share a common ancestor with other East Asian pigs. 3)Morphological and genetic analyses of Vietnamese pigs will provide important information about the history of domestication pig in East Asian, because several pigs with different size or food habit are raising. A part of this research has been published in a paper, the other parts are now prepared in the papers.
