Research Abstract |
In this study, we would prove the historical characteristics of IZUMO-TAISYA Region in Shimane Prefecture in the period of Meiji Restoration, that were almost not made inquiries into. We started to make list of a large quantity of the writing materials kept in Touma's home, distinguished family in IZUMO-TAISYA Region. Those materials show us the following interesting things. Touma Family, there is the tradition that they started shipping before 17's Century, managed the shipping business with 7 ships in Meiji Restoration. The ships came and went on the Sea of Japan, the Seto Inland Sea and others, with rice bags, cotton clothes, iron materials, sugar and so on. And "TomiKuji" that is the public lottery, by IZUMO-TAISYA brought together many people from far Edo, Kinai, Sikoku, Kyushu twice a year in Edo Period. So the people in TAISYA Region plied their trades and Japanese-style hotels for the many visitors. But new Meiji Government prohibited the whole country "Tomikuji" in 1869,and it brought the regional economic depression in Taisya Region. The leaders of region, Touma, the related Kohata in Sinji-Town and so on, strived to revive the regional peace and economic conditions, and to settle the conflict between people and new Government.
