Research Abstract |
The Udagawa's family were Gennzui 玄随 (槐園, 1755 -1817). Gennsinn 玄真 (榛斎, 1769 -1834),Youan 榕菴 (1798 -1846) and Kohsai興斎 (1821-87). They were the doctors of Tsuyama Domain in Edo. They took the lead in the western internal medicine and pharmacy in Japan. They became not only the persons who translated the western encyclopedia "Kousej'sinpen" (厚生新編) by the Tokugawa Shogunate, but they became the pioneer of chemistry and botany etc. I inquired into the several documents of Tsuyama Domain over 100 years. And I made up their records of public lives, Especially Youan and Kohsai. ITOH Keisuke 伊藤圭介(l803-190l) was a disciple of Youan. I examined why he found the importance of western learning.
