Research Abstract |
I tried to find out the special features of Soviet decision-making of military invasions and retreat, for example, the Korean War in 1950 (Stalin era), Prague Spring in 1968 (Brezhnev Era), the invasion of Afghanistan (Brezhnev Era), Poland Crisis in 1981 (Brezhnev era) and the withdrawal from Afghanistan in 1988 (Gorbachev Era). The factor and decision-making process of the Soviet foreign policy were analyzed from the comparison of these examples. Especially I studied with careful attention to not only political method but also new declassified historical archives. (Now it is under research about the Hungary Crisis (1956) in Khrushchev Era) From Stalin to Gorbachev, Realistic perception had influenced the determination of intervention rather than the ideological thinking. There is no mistake in that ideology had influence to recognition whether to be my enemy. But, on the occasion of decision of intervention, the Soviet Union gives priority to the national interest of itself over the profits of allies. It can be said that the influence of the ideology which states "solidarity and coexistence" between communist countries was limited Moreover, in all examples, Kremlin eagerly argues about the U.S. response against Soviet behavior. It was reconfirmed that U.S. factor had big influences to Soviet diplomacy.
