Research Abstract |
The purpose of this project is to develop the multiple inverse method, which is a numerical method for separating stresses from complex fault-slip data, and to open the software of the method to the public. It was found in this project that stress inversion from fault-slip data results in statistical processing upon the five-dimensional unit sphere. Based on this formulation, computational grid points were distributed with uniform intervals on the sphere for improving the resolution of the multiple inverse method. The method yields statistically significant stresses as clusters on the sphere, so that the spherical k-means algorithm was adapted to our problem to automate the determination of the center and spread of clusters. Our improved method evaluates the spread from the distribution of points on the unit sphere. Using the improved method, paleostress analyses were done to elucidate stress history in the Kakegawa, Miyazaki, Hitoyoshi, Niigata, Noto and Ryukyu regions. After the development and improvement, I have opened the software for the multiple inverse method for the public at my website (http://www.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~yamaji/PDS/indexe.html). In addition, I held a workshop on paleostress analysis in May, 2005 for researchers and students in geology.
