Research Abstract

In this study, the following results' are obtained.
(1) We have developed a highly automated inspection system. The system consists of optical surface evaluation unit and specimen carriage unit.Images of the surface of part are captured with a CCD camera-equipped microscope and are analyzed using image processing techniques.Experimental results show that the inspection system is effective for flaw and wear evaluation.
(2)With selective assembly based on combinatorial optimization, a combination of parts is optimized so that high quality assemblies are obtained in a lot unit at the maximum assembly rate while dimensions of each part are referred to appropriately.Simulation results show that reusable parts can be reused if the reusable parts are assembled by selective assembly using genetic algorithm.
(3)A new reconfigurable parts feeding system using arrayed vibratory units made by stereolithography has been developed and investigated. The parts feeding motion is achieved by vibration of an inclined pin grid array using piezoelectric actuators.Experiments moving objects have been successfully performed.Motions of the parts feeding system have been demonstrated experimentally, and lifetime measurements demonstrated the long-term stability of the system. The functionality of the photopolymer resin pins is unaffected through 110 days continuous use.
(4)We have proposed a 3D graphics simulation environment for the analysis and evaluation of reconfigurable manufacturing systems. The reconfigurable manufacturing systems consist of transport robots, input stations, output stations, movable manufacturing cells, and objects to process. The layout of the manufacturing cells is optimized using particle swarm optimization. The effectiveness of the simulator is validated through simulation results of several manufacturing cases.
