Research Abstract

The purposes of this study were to investigate biomechanical characteristics of the gait for the Japanese children and to develop biomechanical database and the standard gait pattern (averaged motion pattern) of the Japanese children. Walking of 284 school children, 141 boys and 143 girls, aged 7 to 12 yrs, was videotaped and analyzed by 2D motion analysis method. The results were summarized, as follows.
Characteristics of the gait for the Japanese children
With increase in the school grade, walking speed, step length and walking ratio (step length / step frequency) increased but the step frequency decreased. The boys indicated larger walking ratio and small step frequency than those of the girls. The gait pattern changed a step frequency-dependent pattern in the lower school grade to a step length-dependent in the higher school grade. The boys were step length-dependent more than the girls. The following differences were observed between boys and girls : The boys extended the hip joint in the support phase more than the girls, which was attributed to more erected trunk and smaller backward lean of the thigh at the foot contact. The range of motion of the knee joint, shank and foot for the girls was larger than those of the boys. Effectiveness of mechanical energy utilization for walking speed increased in boys and girls with the increase in school grade.
Database and the standard gait pattern of the Japanese children
The following variables were developed as database for the Japanese children : walking speed, step length, step frequency, walking ratio, CG motion pattern, patterns of the joint and segment angles, joint torques and torque powers of the recovery leg for every school grade and sex. Based on the kinematics data, the averaged motion patterns as the standard motion were drawn in the stick pictures for every school grade and sex.
