Research Abstract

1.Updating the Corpus Data
In the prooess of using the parallel corpoxa in an experimental research, a number of input ennrs have been detected. The corpus data were reviewed again to contct enors of input Data alignment was also corrected.
2.Updating the Retrieval Programs and Creating a OGI Script
The Perl scripts developed in the previous year were updated to make them more reliable. For users who do not have access to UNIX or linux, a new CGI script was created. Data retrieval has been made available on the Web.
3.Experimental Research
A contrastive study of "(sore)deha" and "Then" was carried out in order to demonstrate the practical use of the parallel corpora The result shows that in many contexts in which "(sore)deha" appears in Japanese, no e~nrple of "Then" were found in English The current dictionary description of the words does not give s satisfactory explanation of the semantics. A marked difference was observed in the semantic and pragmatic usage of both words.
