Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In this research, we tried to tackle macro-structuring of PCP-based catalysts by "coordination-replication process (CRP)" and "ceramic-mimicking engineering (CME)" as shown below. a. Macro-structuring of PCP by CRP We utilized shellfish as Ca2+ precursors to make Ca-based PCPs with macroporous structures. The initial shells were of hierarchical macropores with smooth surfaces. After reacting with squaric acid, the obtained samples showed macroporous structures that were similar to the initial shell. The large amount of nano-/microcrystals were created on the surface, suggesting that the shell has been successfully replicated to Ca-based PCPs. This result indicates that biomineral can be converted to Ca-based PCPs with keeping their macroporous structure. b. Macro-structuration of PCP by CME Ceramics are well-known for their outstanding mechanical stability. We aimed to obtain PCP-catalyst with outstanding mechanical stability by CME. The prepared Al-PCP nanoparticles were tightly assembled by gravity, and then obtained solids were activated at high temperature for long term. Finally, ca. 1 cm diameter of a bulk pellet was obtained. High-magnification image illustrates that significant amount of macropores are created by assemble of nanoparticles. This result suggests a unique way to obtain macroporous PCPs by CME. In summary, we have successfully prepared macroporous PCPs by CRP and CME. These macro-structuring methods would be used for enhancement of catalytic activity of PCPs.
