Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In this project, we aim to understand how neofunctionalization and subfunctionalization occur and whether they are driven by particular genetic elements or functions of nearby genes after whole-genome duplication (WGD). So far, we identified and characterized evidences of WGD from newly sequenced genomes of seventeen fungi species. Notably, using synteny detection, we discovered two WGD events; the first evidence of two independent WGD events in close lineages. Analysis of duplicated gene retention patterns confirmed that these WGD events occurred independently. Our preliminary gene ontology enrichment analyses agreed well with previously published study of WGD in the Saccharomyces. Furthermore, our initial analysis of gene order rearrangements suggested that WGD plays an important role in optimizing the organization of genes on the genome.
