Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Assessing social inclusion and ecological performance in public space provision practices in developing countries. The development of the research is in line with the aims initially proposed. The main objectives set for the six first months have been reached. A main finding in theoretical terms is the uncovering of the sustainability/liveability debate as expressed in the provision of public space. In methodological terms, other finding is the definition of the qualitative and quantitative variables of analysis and the identification of four relevant sites in the case study city of Arequipa (Peru). Finally, based on further discussions with the researcher’s host researcher, the Japanese case (the city of Tokyo-Yokohama) has been included. For this, it will be necessary to engage the services of local translators.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
As described above, the researcher see the progress more than expected (1). The reason for such qualification is based not only on the fact that the theoretical and the methodological frameworks are already developed, but also because at this point the status of the research allows the inclusion of a new case study (i.e. Japan). However, the researcher has managed to already identify and collect information about the new case study.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In the second year, the researcher will engage in fieldwork in Peru and Japan. Initial contacts are being established in both countries with municipal officials, planning practitioners, architects, urban designers and urban and housing developers. In the case of Japan, it will be necessary to hire a translator. After the collection of primary and secondary data, the researcher will analyse and verify her initial conclusions regarding public space provision in both countries and assess the extent of their coincidences and differences. In parallel to fieldwork, the researcher has been accepted to present her work in ICLEI World Congress 2015 and AESOP annual conference 2015. She has also been invited to contribute to a Special Issue of Local Environment Journal.
