Research Abstract |
Commercial publishing was established in the 17th century in Japan. After publication, books spread rapidly throughout Japanese society and they provided common information from the ruler to the ruled. This research studies the role books played in the thought processes of people in the Edo period (江戸時代). It clarifies the huge influence military books (gunsyo, 軍書), as well as medical books (isho 医書) and books on astronomy and almanacs ( tenmonrekisyo 天文暦書) had on the formation of political common sense and the cosmology of the people.
