Research Abstract |
This research attempts to clarify the most suitable role of midwives and structure of the care system for mothers and children. This year is the final year of this research. The purpose this year is to analyze the data collected in better to say "2003 and 2004", and clarify midwives' role to provide proper quality care in medically under provided areas. The analyses were as follows : (1)The data for all midwives in 2 prefectures were analyzed reveal the functioning of the midwives role. (2)The longitudinal data from the prenatal subjects in medically under provided areas of 2 prefectures. (3)The results of a survey on maternal and child health carried out among public health nurses were analyzed. (4)An analysis was carried out a survey by midwives among prenatal subjects on their feelings about the midwives' performance and role. (5)The role of midwives in providing proper quality care and the structure of the caring system for mothers and children were discussed in the light of the results from (1) to (4). As a result, the lack of medical professionals, the sense of dissatisfaction and lack of achievement among midwives, dissatisfaction and anxiety of pregnant women and the lack of community care services emerged as problems. To resolve these problems, dissatisfaction of pregnant women and midwives, the achievement of special care status for the midwife, effective working methods for medical professionals need to be discussed. It was suggested that the care system for mothers and children should be constructed to extend beyond medical professionals and hospitals.
