Research Abstract |
Our research project aims to find out the mechanism of network-based social system which dominates the whole Arab society. This aim would be accomplished by analyzing the inter-personal relationships in various social sectors in the Arab world. The analysis is done through revealing the political, economic, social and cultural circumstances and demonstrating the native meaning of social network. As for the first point, we found that the drastic social change has occurred during these years in most part of investigated areas. It is rooted in the deterioration and depression of political and economic conditions and it has brought the gap between social actors along with the prevalence of despair caused by the irresistible invasion of the so-called Global values. Although the range of people's network and the pattern of migration have been changed according to these factors, the basic principle of inter-personal relationship has been almost intact. Rather, the necessity of wide and firm network has been increased in these years because of the ongoing social uncertainty. Concerning the second point, we found that persons in the past generations play pivotal roles when people construct social networks, while contemporary relationships have long been focused as to play the axial roles. The range of network is extended into the past as well as the present. Our conclusion is that the core mechanism of social system is the flexible inter-personal connections amidst the changing life world which is composed by the sense "here and now." But that sense is organized by two vectors, one of which guides the present and the other guides the past. This finding challenges not only the present-centered notions of politics, economics and sociology but also the tacit stand-point of historical science which considers the past as already finished.
