Research Abstract |
The aim of this study was to develop an analysis system for predicting facial appearance after denture treatment. The system consisted of a measuring part with a 3D measuring device (Danae200, NEC Engineering) using CCD cameras, an image analysis part with image processing software (3D-Rugle4, Medic engineering) treating the facial appearance image as a wire frame model and color image, and additional software designed by us as follow. 1.Preparing two average 3D facial images using wire frame models of some facial appearances. 2.Preparing 3D difference data between the two average 3D facial images as wire frame models. 3.Preparing a deformed wire frame model by adding the difference data to the original wire frame model and mapping the color image data to the deformed model. In the present study, two average 3D wire frame models were obtained from two complete denture patients with and without their dentures. These average 3D wire frame models were used for preparing 3D difference data. A deformed wire frame model and color image data were obtained for another complete denture patient after removing the denture. A predicted facial appearance image after treatment was prepared by texture mapping the color image data to the deformed wire frame model. The predicted facial appearance image and the real facial appearance image with the new denture were very similar to each other except for the mento-labial sulcus. Furthermore, this system was applied to a maxillofacial-mandibular prosthesis patient with a partial defect of the mandible and an implant patient. In application to these patients with their respective features, this system should have additional functions to analyze particular features.
