Research Abstract

Infrared thermography detects thermal energy emitted from various objective surfaces, and it is a procedure for evaluating the surface temperature nondestructively. We can diagnose and evaluate a two-dimensional temperature field having complicated shape every real-time pixel by using this technique, if an appropriate image processing technique is combined. Thus, the technique has widely been used for various applications such as engineering, medical and industrial utilizations. In this paper, the applicability of infrared sensing to nondestructive diagnosis of invisible mines installed in desert zones is numerically investigated with the aid of an appropriate mathematical modeling.
The possibility of a technology which reduces the danger when removing mines is examined by applying the advantage of the infrared sensing to mine exploration for drying and desert zones. From the viewpoint of numerical simulation with an appropriate mathematical model, the followings are examined : the exploration mechanism, the exploration limit, the effects and the factors which accompany the mine exploration. As a result, the following facts are found :
・The infrared mine exploration adopted solar radiation and natural environment, depending on surface emissivity and sunshine duration band, etc., there is an optimum exploring condition.
・The mine exploration becomes difficult with increasing buried depth.
・The demerit of this technique is that the exploration becomes difficult for the case where various contaminations are buried in soil around mines or surface emissivities variously changes. In particular, the vegetation, etc. which grow near the exploring surface becomes an obstruction when exploring jungle zones. On the other hand, in desert zones where it is easy to specify the emissivity, the infrared mine exploration will be comparatively easy to use.
