Research Abstract |
We have obtained the following results by candidate gene analyses of diabetic retinopathy and maculopathy. First, we have found that the C-634G polymorphism of the VEGF gene, which was found to be associated with diabetic retinopathy by us, is also associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Also, we have found that the C-634G is functionally significant, and that it is associated with diabetic macular edema (maculopathy) and correlated with macular thickness in type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, we have found that the T-786C and 27bp-repeat polymorphisms of the eNOS gene are associated with diabetic maculopathy, though it is not significantly associated with diabetic retinopathy.
