Research Abstract |
1.Development of method to assess living environment based on emotional responses of elderly person with dementia We developed a method to assess living environment in accord with the dimensions and items of the Professional Assessment Protocol, Japanese version 3. This method is grounded on behavior and Emotional Responses as Quality Indicators in Dementia Care, based on a concept analysis of comfort for elderly person with dementia. 2.Evaluation of the validity of the developed assessment method The present assessment method was applied to 6 elderly persons with dementia, and the changes in emotional responses and behavior were investigated by manipulating living environment items. From the results, issues such as a lifestyle programs, methods of using wheelchairs, and excessive stimulation were extracted, and the appearance rate of positive emotional responses and behaviors significantly was shown to increase with manipulation of these factors. 3.Modification of assessment method for practical use A simple observation item list was prepared with a view toward practical application. The living environments of 4 elderly persons with dementia were assessed based on this list. There were some items that were difficult to observe with this list, but the appearance rate of positive emotional responses and behaviors increased by manipulation of the identified items. Conclusion By supporting living environments identified by this assessment method, the emotional responses and behaviors of elderly persons with dementia changed in positive ways, indicating that the method can help provide comfort. The present assessment method is thus considered to be effective.
