Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
A total of 1854 ARI cases were enrolled of which 426 (22.98%) were RSV positive. During three years study period, RSV-A and B had been co-circulating. NA1 genotype was the predominant RSV-A genotype before the appearance of ON1 in 2012. We found that the RSV-related ARI hospitalization incidence significantly increased after the emergence of ON1 in Nha Trang. Moreover, multivariate analyses revealed that RSV-A ON1 was associated with clinical severity compared to previously predominant NA1 genotype: risk of Lower Respiratory Tract Infection was 2.26 (95%CI:1.37-3.72) times, and radiologically-confirmed pneumonia was 1.97 (95%CI:1.04-3.74) times greater.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Our prospective ARI surveillance study was going on well. We could screened for RSV positive samples and genotyped them properly. Currently we are doing preliminary data analysis and will try to report in international conference.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
We will continue virus testing of the pediatric ARI cases enrolled to our study. Multiplex PCR assays will be conducted to screen for RSV and other respiratory viruses. The RSV positive samples will be genotyped. The association of clinical severity and the genotype will be investigated. We will also investigate the evolution rate, positive and negative selected genetic patterns of RSV viruses and its association with disease severity among hospitalized ARI cases in Vietnam.
