Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Heifer Bangladesh believes that if inclusive communities receive Heifer's values-based holistic community development trainings, along with value chain and cooperative development trainings, the communities will be able to overcome food insecurity and poverty with dignity and social harmony as well as be empowered to utilize microfinance to advance their economic development. The goals of the study are (i) to compare the income and asset between participants of intervention and control group, (ii) to investigate and compare the food security situation for both the Heifer and control groups, (iii) to evaluate the environment friendly livelihood practices for both the Heifer participants and standard microfinance groups and (iv) finally, to suggest a policy mix to social capital formation and poverty alleviation. In response to these objectives, three surveys (baseline survey 2013, annual surveys 2014, and 2015) were completed in the four study locations. The average monthly expenditure is increasing. There is radical increase the number of poultry in the households of the Heifer group. There is no significant difference in the ownership of pig in Ashrai at Tanore. The months of food availability is higher, which means more stability in access to food. Vegetable producing households among Heifer groups have radically increased. Wives’ participation in decision making has increased. Husbands might be also happy as their wives are capable of earning and saving money and can use it for family purposes.
