Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During FY2016, l was able to carry out the following research activities in line with my research plan focused on the post-2015 development agenda. This concentrated on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 12) on Sustainable Consumption and Production: (i)case study research in South Africa, focused on companies involved in sustainable agriculture and consumption practices in May 2016; (ii) I attended the Asia-Pacific Roundtable on Sustainable Consumption and Production(APRSCP) in Cambodia from 12-13 July 2016. This enabled me to carry out interviews with key stakeholders in the Asia-Pacific on issues related to developing a regional and national roadmap to implement SDG 12; (iii) interviews and survey of various actors including business, national and local government involved in reducing food waste and loss in Japan from September 2016 to March 2017; (iv) Interviews of various actors, particularly, those responsible for launching the Malaysia SCP Blueprint in October 2016; (v)designed and administered questionnaire for consumers in Malaysia from October 2016 to February 2017; (vi) feedback workshop and final data collection in South Africa from November to December 2016; (vii) organized public dialogue on regional coordination in implementing the SDGs in the Asia-Pacific region in October 2016; (viii) participated in a 4 day workshop on sustainable consumption and production with other researchers in Bangkok, Thailand in October, 2016.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The researcher has been able to achieve significant levels of progress in relation to the purpose of the study because he has been able to develop a substantive network of stakeholders to support the data collection. Firstly, the researcher is part of the Governance for Sustainable Development (GSD) team at the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS). The team is comprised of experts in sustainability and governance who were supportive in developing my conceptual framework and research plan. I was able to present my research plan and preliminary data in workshops and sessions at UNU-IAS. Secondly, through participation in workshops and roundtable discussions, mostly in Asia l have met several individuals which has allowed me to broaden my network. I have managed to utilize this network to carry out interviews and other data collection. For example, the network of researchers in Malaysia were supportive in administering the survey for over 500 consumers in both rural and urban areas. Thirdly, the progress in the data collection can also be attributed to the methodology and case study that l selected. The case studies in Japan, Malaysia and South Africa focused on sectors and companies mostly engaged in sustainable production and consumption operating in different contexts.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Given the significant progress of the data collection process, l intend to continue with the research plan. This is also because l haven’t experienced major issues which could potentially disrupt the research plan. Therefore, the last 5 months of my fellowship will focus on finalizing the data collection, data analysis and sharing the preliminary findings. As a result, l focus on the following activities: (i) attend the International Studies Association (ISA) conference in Hong Kong to present a paper (14-18 June, 2017); (ii) finalize interviews in Japan, mostly, among local municipalities (May-June, 2017); (iii) finalize interviews in Malaysia (June-July, 2017); (iv) administer consumer survey in Japan (June-August, 2017); (v) attend Asia-Pacific Roundtable on Sustainable Consumption and Production, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; (vi) attend and present a paper at the 9th International Forum for Sustainable Asia and the Pacific (ISAP) in June/July 2017.
