Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In order to develop a novel method for recovery of elements that will increase Japan's self-sufficiency and reduce the need for metal imports, the key aim of this project is to synthesize stable porous monoliths from waste seaweed and rice straw. Therefore the first task was to source feedstocks of these wastes. One kilogram (dry weight) of each biomass was likely to be sufficient for lab scale testing. Once received laboratory-scale, investigations into the production of porous materials using sustainable and salable procedures should begin. The idea was to keep production simple and low cost with a maximum of three to five steps from the initial biomass feedstock to final material.
