Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Atmospheric River(AR)は、深い水蒸気の帯が湿潤な熱帯域から中緯度へ細長く伸びる現象で、米西海岸に豪雨をもたらす。日本の梅雨秋雨期の集中豪雨の際も、数千㎞に及ぶAR状の雲域が観測されることがある。2014年8月の広島豪雨の際も、インドシナ半島から延びるARが観察された。しかし日本の豪雨へのARの効果は未だ認識されていない。本研究は、ARが日本域の豪雨に果たす役割、及び、大気大循環変動がARの形成を通して日本域降水特性へ及ぼす効果を解明することを目的とする。
平成28年度は、熱帯降雨観測衛星(TRMM)搭載降水レーダの13年間の観測から、日本周辺極東域での極端降水イベント・極端対流イベントを同定し、各々の降水特性および大規模環境場の違いについて解析した。結果、2種類の極端イベントは、降水特性・環境場ともに大きく異なっていた。極端降水イベントの環境は、自由対流圏の深い湿潤化が特徴的で、これには中国南部から日本上空へのAR的な水蒸気の流れが関与していた。
ARをもたらす現象のひとつである梅雨前線に伴う降水特性の、大規模場への依存性を調べた。まず梅雨期の亜熱帯ジェットは、南側の2次循環に伴う上昇流により中層を湿潤化し、メソスケールに組織化した降水に好都合な場を提供していた。一方、下層の大気不安定は対流の開始に効き、対流不安定が強いときには組織化しない深い降水が生じていた。
衛星マイクロ波観測データを用いた解析の結果、2013年8月31日の日本域AR事例の降水形成過程は、米国西岸域のARと大きく異なる特徴をもつことが判明した。
対流圏ジェット気流の再現性が成層圏の表現と関連性があることを踏まえ、そのメカニズムを詳しく解析した。成層圏の大規模な子午面循環であるブリューワー・ドブソン循環の再現性が、成層圏極夜ジェットを変え、その影響が対流圏まで伸びていることが判明した。

Reason

1.計画通りTRMM衛星およびGPM衛星搭載の降雨レーダ観測による3次元降雨データを用い、極端降雨の特徴とその時の大気環境場構造を調べた。結果、極端降雨発生の環境場の特徴として中国南部からのAR状の厚い水蒸気場の存在を示した。
2.計画通り2013年8月31日のARの事例解析を行った。この時の豪雨の発生域はARからずれていた。衛星データからは、この事例の豪雨が氷床過程を伴い、米国のARに伴う豪雨と異なることが分かった。
3.計画通りMIROC版気候モデルを用い、成層圏をフルカバーするハイトップ及びフルカバーしないロートップモデルによる実験を行い、両モデル間の対流圏ジェット、地表面気圧、降水帯の違いを比較した。その結果、亜熱帯ジェットの形成・変動における成層圏の重要性を明らかにした。
4.計画通り、課題の科学的知見をとりまとめるため、代表者、分担者間の議論を行った。AR、豪雨、対流圏ジェット、成層圏ジェットの関係についての知見をとりまとめることができた。今年度の成果をまとめ、学会発表・論文発表を行った。
5.平成27年9月に発生した関東東北豪雨の降水の同位体観測を行い、水蒸気起源を求めたのは、計画外の成果であった。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

1.27-28年度に抽出したARと日本域豪雨との関係を、暖候期、寒候期の双方において調べる。気象再解析データを用いて、ARが検出される大規模場の構造、および西太平洋域のARに特徴的な気象場と輸送する水蒸気の鉛直構造を解析する。
2.TRMM衛星およびGPM衛星搭載の降雨レーダ観測による3次元降雨データを用いて、極端降雨の特徴とARを含む大気場構造が極端降雨の特徴にもたらす効果を調べる。AR内外の降雨の特徴を比較解析し、ARが降雨特性にもたらす効果を統計的に解析する。特に、広島豪雨の際に示唆されたARと上層寒冷渦(Cut Off Low: COL)との強雨への相乗効果について長期再解析データ(JRA55)を用いて統計的に確認する。
3.2013年8月31日のARと豪雨域の位置ずれの原因を探るため、ARと豪雨域の位置関係を、日本のレーダに加え韓国のレーダも併せて解析する。これらの地上降雨レーダの詳細解析により、地形との関連についても調べる。
4.29年度は温暖化実験を行い、気候変動の影響を調査する。成層圏をフルカバーするハイトップ及びフルカバーしないロートップモデルにより温暖化実験を行う。両モデル間の対流圏ジェット、地表面気圧、降水帯の違いを系統的に明らかにし、気候変動に伴うAR 及び亜熱帯ジェットの形成・変動における成層圏循環の重要性を調査する。
5.成果をとりまとめ、学会発表・論文化を行う。代表者、分担者間の議論を密に行い、ARを介した中緯度力学・熱帯降水結合と日本域での豪雨との関係とメカニズムについて課題としての科学的知見をとりまとめる。
