Outline of Annual Research Achievements

これまで湿度制御装置を二軸摩擦試験機に導入し,モンモリロナイトなどの粘土鉱物の摩擦特性への湿度の効果を検証し,粘土鉱物の摩擦係数は湿度の上昇とともに系統的に低下することを明らかにした。本年度は,白雲母やブルーサイトなど他の粘土鉱に対する湿度の効果を実験的に検証するとともに,摩擦係数に関する第一原理計算の結果と照合し,鉱物の摩擦特性を支配する要因を検討した。その結果,結晶接触面での原子間にはたらく静電的な力が,粘土鉱物の摩擦を支配することが明らかとなった。粘土鉱物は沈み込みプレート境界断層や内陸断層にも広く確認されることから,これらミクロな摩擦のモデルをマクロな地震発生プロセスに拡張し,地震発生を支配するメカニズムを今後提案していければと考えている。また,粘土鉱物の摩擦実験を行う際に地震波速度を測定し,粘土鉱物の配向などの構造変化によって地震波速度が変化することが明らかとなった。このことは,地震波干渉法などの物理観測によって断層の構造変化を捉えることができることを示唆しており,実験と観測を照らし合わせることで断層の状態(地震の準備過程)を把握することができると期待される。これらの現象は,今後より詳細な室内実験並びに理論・観測によって検証していきたい。
