| Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
2014-15年にアラスカ北部の陸岸近くに設置していた超音波氷厚計データの処理・解析を行い、過去に陸岸近くで得られたデータの場合と同様に、海氷が岸に固着した定着氷の期間に海氷厚が大きく左右されることを確認した。
アラスカ北部沿岸域における船舶によるリピート観測については、2018年の夏季にもカナダの砕氷船によって実施し、更なる現場海洋データの蓄積を図ることができた。また、過去のリピート観測の結果をまとめて、この海域の海水特性の夏から秋にかけての季節変化について明らかにした（Pickart et al., in press)。
アラスカ北部沿岸域において冬季に生成される特徴的な海水について、これまでの我々の係留観測で得られた海洋の時系列データ（水温・塩分、海洋流速）、周辺海域で得られた同様のデータ、人工衛星搭載のマイクロ波放射計データから推定される海氷厚データとそれを気象データと組み合わせて計算される海氷生産量、高解像度海氷・海洋結合モデルの結果を合わせて解析した。その結果、この海水の生成過程には、太平洋起源の海水だけでなく、大西洋起源の海水も影響していることが明らかとなった。また、衛星データによる海氷厚推定の一部である開水面の同定に関して、海氷・海洋結合モデルの計算結果との比較を行い、衛星データによって同定された開水面が比較的高温の大西洋起源の海水の分布と一致していることから、衛星データによる開水面同定の妥当性についても示した。本研究成果をまとめた論文 (Hirano et al., 2018) の図の一つが掲載された国際学術誌 (Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans) の8月号の表紙に選ばれた。
