Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Miniature pressure gauges and a tactile sensor were employed to a set of 1g model test of a dry sand heap in an attempt to capture the appearance and vanishing of the local zone of stress concentration due to the formation of passive arch action induced by the basal settlement along the center line. The measured data from pressure gauges and a tactile sensor confirm a similar pattern of pressure distribution of self-weight transferring to the basal support, and reveal a movable zone of stress concentration in associated with the hysteretic reversals of deformation applied in the experiments. Preliminary tests of embankment model in 1g using the shaking table test and 50g using the centrifuge machine were conducted for further planning of more detailed experiments.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

Though the periods of conducting centrifugal model are limited due to many users of centrifugal machine at Disaster Prevention Research Institute of Kyoto University, some cases of experiment were scaled down to 1g shaking table tests for conducting at Katsura campus with extra cases for further investigation. Numerical analyses in static condition were carried out and compared with the experiments.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

In order to facilitate extra works on experiment, one more graduate student is assigned to assist. Soil chamber will be designed and created based on preliminary experiments. Necessary utilities and instruments will be prepared and equipped to the physical models. Sophisticated numerical analyses will be carried out.
