Outline of Final Research Achievements

The sea-level rise has already influenced several islands in Solomon Islands. Due to technical and financial reasons, the relocation project had not been implemented during the research period, so that the post-effect of the relocation project was not directly investigated. On the other hands, small island which was remote from other islands experienced high population density, sea level rise, resource scarcity, and unstable transport and showed high prevalence of mental health issues. Public health challenges will be to control non-communicable diseases in urban areas and mental health in such remote islands. It is recommended that adaptation to the sea-level rise should integrate solutions for such public health issues.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

ソロモン諸島の小島嶼部における海面上昇の社会影響を調査した、貴重な研究である。特に、そのような島の健康状態を調べた研究はほかにない。結果として、各地における感染症・栄養状態・生活習慣病などの疫学的パターンを示したうえ、地域による発生状況の違いを明らかにした。これまで、ほとんど研究がされてこなかった、メンタルヘルスの状況を明らかにしたことも特に重要であった。このような結果は、海面上昇が深刻化する中で、環境・社会と人々の健康を両立させる適応策を考えるために重要なものとなる。そして、日本や国際社会がそのためにどのような支援をしていくかを考えるための材料となるものである。
