Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究は、断層上盤の応力場・主応力と間隙水圧、プレート境界断層の摩擦強度を解明し、それらを総合した地震・津波発生切迫度の定量評価が目的である。
その達成のために初年度は、１．既存掘削データ・試料の解析・実験、２．第１回周回地震探査および孔内観測装置の回収とデータ分析、３．超深度掘削孔VSP探査のためのモデリング を実施した。その結果、１に関しては、①三次元探査データの再処理の詳細な仕様を検討した結果、広帯域化を含むデータ前処理、多重反射によるノイズ除去、深度イメージング、の順番で処理を進めることが最適と判明。前処理の結果、深部イメージの向上に寄与するシグナルの著しい改善が得られた。②南海トラフ掘削の海底下深度約1.6km以浅のこれまでの全応力場関係のデータをまとめた。正断層型の応力状態が卓越しており、C0002を除く各掘削サイトでは水平最大主応力がプレートの沈み込む方向と平行であることが確認された。③掘削試料について原位置条件で低速摩擦実験を行った。深度の増大に伴って定常摩擦強度が低下し、変位速度依存性は海底下2000 m以深では比較的小さく局所的に負となり、非地震性と地震性の間の遷移的な断層運動が起こっている可能性があることが明らかとなった。
２に関しては、第1回掘削孔周回地震探査を実施し、P波地震波速度異方性および広域の浅部S波速度異方性の解析を実施した。また、次年度からの繰り返し探査に備え、海中音速構造の時間変化の影響とその除去法について検討した。
３に関しては、受信機設置深度等の探査設計事例研究を行った。その結果、速度構造により発振した波が孔内受信機に届かない領域が存在するなど，設計課題が抽出された。このため，既存データの再解析によるターゲットの絞り込みが極めて重要であることが判明した。
以上結果を、海外の研究協力者、連携研究者などとともに国際集会を開催、議論を深めた。

Reason

掘削開始前の既存データ、試料の分析・実験、周回地震探査の開始、VSP探査のモデリングとも予定通り進行している。ただ、当初予定していたものに加えて、既存データ、特に3次元地震反射法によって得られていたデータ解析には、データ取得の2006年から現在に至るまでの間に、他地域において同手法による解析技術、および解析結果の科学的解釈に大きな進歩があり、それに応じた検討が必要なことが一層明確となったので、アメリカの研究協力者と共同で、当初予定より一層重点的な研究を実施することとした。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

本研究実施中の2017年4月1日、本研究の対象である紀伊半島沖掘削地点直下でM6.1の地震が起こった。IODP南海地震発生帯掘削計画365次航海実施中のことであった。この航海の目的は、掘削孔内に2010年設置した観測装置の回収と、地殻内流体の圧力温度変化、傾動を連続観測する新しい装置を設置することであった。プレート境界近傍からはじまり、プレート内部へ破壊が伝播したこの地震がどのように記録されているのかが解析できることとなった。また、航海では予定が変更され、断層を含めて、追加的に掘削試料を回収することも急遽決まった。これらのデータ・試料の分析・解析は本研究の目的に合致するので、連携研究者、協力研究者との共同研究を含めて、予定に追加的に加えることとした。
