Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
1) From October 2015 to March 2016, the analysis of the 40 initial profiles of the young women (Academy 2015) were coded and analyzed. 2) I attended 2016 Iwate Grassroots Academy. Scheduled for the Fall 2015, it was delayed until February 2016. 3) A questionnaire was issued at the Iwate Academy. I await the results from workshop organizers. 4) I completed 4 qualitative interviews at the Iwate Grassroots Academy to create case studies that stand out from the 40 original profiles. 5) I added a new piece of data; we analyzed the profiles of the 20 young women who participated in the Iwate Academy.
International Symposium: On February 16th, for the Institute of Social Science, I hosted an Symposium on Women's Leadership, Diversity and Risk Governance. Entitled, "An Intergenerational Dialogue with Women Pioneers of DRR: Diversity and Risk Governance", this Symposium featured 1 of the Iwate Grassroots Academy participants who is the focus of one of my case studies. It also featured a presentation by my research collaborating NPO Women's Eye regarding the two Grassroots Academies held in 2015 and 2016. To foster international dialogue, I invited the leading American women seismologist (Dr. Lucy Jones), and the pioneer of women's studies in Japan (Dr. Hara Hiroko).
Presentations: A draft paper on the initial 40 profiles is being co-authored with my research assistant in Canada. We will present it in Tokyo and Vancouver in the Fall 2016. A draft paper based on the Iwate women’s 20 profiles and the 4 case studies is being developed for presentations in 2017.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
4: Progress in research has been delayed.
Reason
Behind Schedule: The analysis of the initial 40 profiles of the women who participated in the 2015 Grassroots Academy advanced according to schedule. However, new participants were added in to the leadership program in 2016 and these profiles were added into the dataset. Originally scheduled for October 2015, the organizers delayed the Iwate Academy until February 2016, which I attended to familiarize myself with the new profiles. I received the final list of profiles in late February. The final analysis all of the 2015 and 2016 participants combined, as well as as with the written survey results, is delayed due to the delay in the Iwate workshop itself. Ahead of schedule: I took the opportunity to begin some of the qualitative interviews during the Iwate Grassroots Academy. I completed 4 qualitative interviews in Iwate to deepen a few case studies that stand out from the 40 original profiles.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
1) We will finalize the analysis of the 40 profiles in light of the new Iwate Academy participant profiles. 2) I will analyze the qualitative interviews of the 4 case studies from Iwate. 3) I will analyze the written survey results from the Iwate participants. 4) In light of 1), 2), 3), focusing on different criteria, working with research collaborators, we will draft 2 or 3 articles that will be compiled into the English report. 5) The English report will then be sent to translation. The Japanese-English report will be published as the Institute of Social Sciences Research Series.
