Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In the 2015 fiscal year, I was able to complete my research on the philosophy of human relationships in the Kyoto School of Philosophy. I examined the practical applications of Watsuji Tetsuro through comparative studies with philosophers of education. I also conducted research on other members of the Kyoto School and their views on education and human becoming. The results of this research was extensively shared with the public. I was able to complete seven articles for publication. One of these publications was for a very prestigious ISI journal, "Journal of Philosophy of Education." Three of these articles are already in publication. I was able to deliver five conference presentations--in Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, Metro Manila, and Washington D.C. (Two of these presentations were prior to the dates officially specified by this grant.) The last presentation was at the largest philosophy conference in the United States. Through these publications, I was able to communicate the relevance of the Kyoto School of Philosophy for various issues facing global society today. I believe I am making a contribution to the growing recognition of the global importance of Japanese Philosophy, particularly in the field of philosophy of education.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
As planned, I was able to extend my research on Watsuji to the field of human relationships and philosophy of education. I was able to conduct the comparative research I originally suggested (to existential pedagogy and engaged pedagogy). I was also able to collaborate extensively with Prof. Nishihira Tadashi (Kyoto University), with whom a book project is underway, moving me slightly ahead of schedule.
I originally proposed three conference presentations (Tokyo, Kyoto, and Washington D.C.), and I was able to deliver those. But in addition, I also presented my research in Nara at the 58th Annual Conference, Philosophy of Education Society of Japan, and at the Asian Association of Christian Philosophers: The Modernities and Democracies of Asia held in Metro Manila.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
This fiscal year will build on the above research, and develop it into two key publications. First, a book on no-mind and care (in Japanese), which is being co-written with three collaborators. The investigator is writing two chapters on the applications of Watsuji to philosophy of education. Second, a single-author manuscript on Watsuji's Ethics of Emptiness (in English). Parts of this research are scheduled to be presented in Fukuoka and in Nagoya, and perhaps in an international conference as well. Research will also be expanded to the Kyoto School of Education (which is the development of the Kyoto School of Philosophy in the Department of Education). This will involve textual analysis of works by Kimura Motomori, Mori Akira, and their living representatives. Drawing on these insights, the investigator will also develop a complete philosophy of education from the point of view of Watsuji Tetsuro. In order to deepen these ideas, the investigator will continue to collaborate with Prof. Nishihira Tadashi (Kyoto University) and Prof. Kazashi Nobuo (Kobe University). The investigator is now also a member of a research team of Prof. Saito Naoko (Kyoto University).
