Outline of Final Research Achievements |
According to my research project, I visited several museums in Japan and overseas in order to collect research materials related to Dionysos depicted both in Greco-Roman art and Gandharan sculpture. As a result, it became clear that there are exclusively plenty of images depicting drinking and fraternizing scenes of Dionysos and his followers in Gandharan sculpture while in Greco-Roman art are represented many types of Dionysiac myths. Furthermore, by referring to descriptions of Buddhist sutras, I clarified that the Dionysiac imagery depicted on Gandharan sculpture is related to the Buddhist thought of rebirth in heaven after death.
