Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In FY 2015, I conducted research at the National Archives in College Park Maryland looking for period documents on the confiscated Japanese wartime paintings and on the various programs set up in the US to generate and distribute US wartime paintings, posters, and imagery. I located large numbers of relevant documents and photographs for both the confiscated Japanese paintings and various US programs that commissioned and distributed US wartime imagery. I also gathered information about several other WDC area museums that hold collections of US wartime paintings in preparation for a subsequent visit. During the last fiscal year I made repeated visits to the Tokyo Kokuritsu Kindai Bijutsukan to study their rotating exhibitions of sensoga, including taking many photographs of the details of these large works. During the recent Tokinbi exhibition of all their Fujita sensoga I made two trips to Tokyo and spent many hours making detailed notes on all of the works. This study of Fujita’s work revealed many new aspects of his these paintings. I have continued to collect relevant period materials from the war years as well as gathered recent international scholarship published in Europe on European wartime painting, including a recent publication on Norwegian wartime painting. I presented a talk, Sensoga Returns: Reengaging War Imagery from Fujita Tsuguji to Aida Makoto, at the 2016 AAS annual convention in Seattle. The new material I presented on Fujita’s sensoga was well received by the specialists in the audience.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
I presented a talk, Sensoga Returns: Reengaging War Imagery from Fujita Tsuguji to Aida Makoto, at the 2016 AAS annual convention in Seattle. The new material I presented on Fujita’s sensoga was well received by the specialists in the audience. However, I have not yet been able to locate an appropriate scholar to review my developing translation of Japanese wartime documents.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
During the coming year, I expect to be able to hold discussions about my research with scholars at Tobenken and at the Himeji Shiritsu Bijutsukan. During During the coming year, I expect to hold discussions about my research with scholars at Tobunken and at the Himeji Shiritsu Bijutsukan. Discussions have already begun about the possibility of forming a panel about Fujita's sensoga. Research on paintings at the Tokinbi will continue as well on the analysis of wartime publications in Japan and overseas.
In the fall, another trip to the WDC area to continue archival research and view US wartime paintings in local military museums. Preparations are underway for a presentation on my research on wartime painting at CAA or AAS conventions early in 2017.
