Outline of Final Research Achievements

In this study, I investigated the complex ways in which dramatists working in Restoration England represented such political crises as the Exclusion Crisis and the Glorious Revolution and how drama changed through these crises. The Exclusion Crisis produced two opposing factions, later to be political parties, Tory and Whig. I discussed the ways in which Tory and Whig dramatists awakened fear and anxiety in representing these crises and produced a new genre of drama in satirizing the crises.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究では、王政復古期演劇が、王位継承排除危機と名誉革命という政体の危機の表象を通じて、どのように新たな表現のためのヴォキャブラリーやパターンを生み出し、18世紀演劇へと連なる新たなジャンルを生み出したかを考察した。従来も、政治的危機と演劇との関連を論じた研究はあったが、それらは王位継承排除危機に特化し、演劇をトーリーもしくはホイッグのイデオロギーのプロパガンダとみなしがちであった。トーリーとホイッグとは、今日世界的な〈多様化〉と〈分断〉の潮流のなかで危機に陥っている二大政党制の起源であるが、本研究は、その原点に立ち返って、演劇が政治との対峙においてどのような役割を果たしたのかを考察した。
