Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
We performed two kinds of pilot researches: one in which a short story written by an American writer was discussed in groups; and another which dealt with the translation of a picture book. In the former research, Kudo recorded each group discussion in class. In the second research, Sugimura and Minamitsu used a short story, written mainly for younger children, as educational material. Sugimura intentionally gave the story, without pictures, to her students, and made them conjecture what would happen next, and then, translate it into Japanese. Conversely, Minamitsu not only made his students translate the story into Japanese, but also made them draw a picture based on what they imagined when they read the story. Thus, we collected data, which we will be analyzing in the 2018-2019 academic year. Sugimura and Kudo presented a paper at the 56th JACET International Convention to demonstrate issues that university students faced in their reading comprehension. Sugimura read some articles on imagination (which she believes helps improve the critical thinking of readers of literary texts). She also studied some of the Bronte sisters’ novels concerning imagination, and delivered lectures on imagination and education in nineteenth-century UK in the extension courses at Yokohama and Osaka, as well as in the conference. Sugimura discussed the problems that readers of Welsh poetry have faced so far with the Chief Director of the Institute of Japanese Studies in Bangor University, and made educational material to help Japanese readers to understand it.

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
We have found more articles to read on translation and literary texts, and also need to visit Bangor in the UK again this summer to consult with the teaching staff there and revise the materials that Sugimura made for the poetry-reading class there. We did not plot out our critical thinking criteria last year.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In the summer, Sugimura and Minamitsu are traveling to the UK to further research on poetry-reading for the cultivation of critical thinking. Sugimura intends to re-read the OCR-related articles and uncover some items for the evaluation of critical thinking. Kudo intends to conduct her pilot research using “‘The Fun They Had”’ by Asimov, and Sugimura and Minamitsu conduct their pilot research using a picture book. We analyze the results obtained respectively, further exploring how these literary texts should be used extensively in the future, and examine the practical implications of literary reading concerning the cultivation of thinking skills.

Causes of Carryover |
Last summer, Sugimura planned to visit the UK to discuss educational material that would help participants in a summer program in Bnagor to understand a Welsh poem in class, but she could not do so. Therefore, Sugimura and Minamitsu are going there to do research and discuss this material with the staff in Bangor next year. Sugimura found many more books related to literature or literary theory that she could purchase and read. We are planning to use the remainder of the money next year.
